The College Rowing Recruiting Timeline | RosterWise™

Under the 2026-27 NCAA Division I Manual, women's rowing is not among the sport exceptions to the phone-call rule. Its Division I dates: no phone calls, recruiting materials, email or texts from coaches before June 15 after the sophomore year, and no off-campus contact or official visits before August 1 of the junior year. Written scholarship offers can't come before August 1 of the senior year. Division II opens in-person contact and official visits on June 15 before the junior year, and Division III allows unofficial visits at any time. The NCAA holds no men's rowing championship, and we don't state which recruiting rules reach a men's crew: ask each program. This guide lays out the dates, the 2026-27 Division I dead period and shutdown for women's rowing, and the questions to ask.

This guide lays out the recruiting dates in the NCAA’s 2026-27 Division I, II and III Manuals and recruiting calendars, as they apply to women’s rowing. Every date here is anchored to the 2026-27 academic year; check the current year’s Manual and calendar before relying on one later.

Men’s rowing works differently. The NCAA holds no men’s rowing championship, and we don’t state which NCAA recruiting rules reach a men’s crew. The section on men’s programs explains what to ask instead.

First step: the NCAA Eligibility Center

The NCAA’s Eligibility Center page says: “Students desiring to compete at any NCAA school must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.” Division I and II require the Academic and Athletics Certification account. Division III requires a Profile Page for domestic students, or an Athletics Certification account for international students. Students may register at any age.

Walk-ons and preferred walk-ons must register too, and official visits to Division I or II schools are among the cases that need a certification account.

Two Division I steps depend on it. A school may not host a recruit on an official visit until she has registered with the Eligibility Center, is on the school’s request list and has given it a transcript (Bylaw 13.6.3). And before a written offer of athletics aid, she must have registered, be on the school’s request list and have completed the Eligibility Center’s athletics questionnaire (Bylaw 13.9.2). Our Eligibility Center guide covers the process.

Division I women’s rowing: the key dates

Under the 2026-27 Division I Manual, women’s rowing is not among the sport exceptions to the phone-call rule, so it follows the general rule (Bylaw 13.1.3.1 and its exceptions).

Date What can begin Bylaw
June 15 after the sophomore year Phone calls from coaches to a recruit or her family; recruiting materials, email and texts 13.1.3.1; 13.4.1
August 1 at the start of the junior year Off-campus contact; official (paid) visits; unofficial visits with athletics involvement 13.1.1.1; 13.6.2.1.1; 13.7.1.1
August 1 of the senior year Written scholarship offers 13.9.3.1
Second Wednesday in November, 7 a.m. The signing date for rowing, under the “all other sports” rule 13.02.13.1-(f)

A recruit may sign a written offer only during a signing period or on or after the signing date (Bylaw 13.9.3.1).

The written offer replaced the National Letter of Intent

In October 2024, the Division I Council ruled that “written offers of athletics aid will replace the NLI,” effective immediately, ending the National Letter of Intent in Division I. The NCAA’s scholarships page adds: “Division II schools may still use it.”

Once a recruit signs a written aid offer with a Division I or II school, or a settlement benefits agreement with a Division I school, other Division I schools that give athletics aid may not contact her (Bylaw 13.1.1.2). For how verbal commitments, the NLI and the written offer compare, see our commitment guide.

2026-27 dead period and shutdown for women’s rowing

The NCAA’s 2026-27 recruiting calendar for “other” Division I sports, updated August 4, 2026, lists these periods for women’s rowing:

  • Dead period: November 9-12, 2026, the Monday through Thursday of the fall signing week. During a dead period there are no in-person contacts or evaluations, and no official or unofficial visits.
  • Recruiting shutdown: December 22, 2026 to January 2, 2027. During a shutdown there is no recruiting of any kind, including calls and correspondence.

If you’re planning a campus visit, check it against these dates.

Division II

Under the 2026-27 Division II Manual:

  • In-person contact may not happen before June 15 before the junior year (Bylaw 13.1.1.1). Otherwise, coaches may communicate “at any time” (Bylaw 13.1.3.1).
  • Official visits may not happen before June 15 before the junior year (Bylaw 13.3.1.2).
  • Signing: the Division II signing date for “all other sports” is the second Wednesday in November (Bylaw 13.02.10.1-©). The 2026-27 Division II calendar sets the signing-date dead period for all other sports from 7 a.m. November 9 to 7 a.m. November 11, 2026.

Because NCAA.org says Division II schools may still use the National Letter of Intent, ask a Division II program which document it uses.

Division III

Under the 2026-27 Division III Manual:

  • In-person, off-campus contact may happen only after the sophomore year is completed (Bylaw 13.1.1.1).
  • Official visits: one official visit, from January 1 of the junior year (Bylaw 13.6.1.1.1).
  • Unofficial visits: unlimited, at any time (Figure 13-1).

Division III schools may not award athletic scholarships; see our scholarships guide.

Men’s rowing: ask which rules a program follows

The NCAA holds no men’s rowing championship (Bylaw 18.3 of the 2026-27 Division I, II and III Manuals), and its 2026-27 roster-limit and scholarship tables don’t list men’s rowing. We don’t state which NCAA recruiting rules reach a men’s crew.

Ask each men’s program which rules it follows: when its coaches may call and write, when visits can happen, and whether and when it makes written offers. If the coach isn’t sure, ask the school’s compliance office. Our guide to who governs college rowing explains the organizations behind the men’s season.

Questions to ask coaches

  1. “When do you make written offers, and how long would we have to answer?” The Manual sets the earliest date; a program’s own timing is its decision.
  2. “Do you use a written offer of athletics aid or the National Letter of Intent?” A Division II question in particular, since NCAA.org says Division II schools may still use the NLI.
  3. “For the men’s team: which recruiting rules do you follow?” We don’t state which NCAA rules reach a men’s crew.
  4. “Which visits do you host, and when?” Official, unofficial and the dead period all have dates attached.
  5. “Is there anything my athlete needs to finish with the Eligibility Center before a visit or an offer?” In Division I, both an official visit and a written offer depend on Eligibility Center steps.

The calendar sets the earliest dates

The rules here say when contact, visits and offers may begin. They don’t say when a particular program will act, or whether it will. Use the dates to know what is possible at each point, and the conversation with each coach to learn what is actually planned.
