College Softball Recruiting: How Many Programs There Are in 2026-27, by Division | RosterWise™
College softball program counts are easy to find and hard to check. A count only means something with a season and a source attached, so here are the governing bodies’ own lists for 2026-27, as each body published them when we read them on October 29, 2026. None of the NAIA documents we read lists its softball teams, so the NAIA figure is our own count of its conferences’ pages, read the same day.
| Governing body | Level | Programs, 2026-27 | Whose list |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCAA | Division I | 308 | NCAA directory |
| NCAA | Division II | 274 | NCAA directory |
| NCAA | Division III | 395 | NCAA directory |
| NCAA | All divisions | 977 | |
| NAIA | — | 190 | Our count of 19 conferences’ pages (below) |
| NJCAA | Division I | 136 | NJCAA 2026-27 team roll |
| NJCAA | Division II | 160 | NJCAA 2026-27 team roll |
| NJCAA | Division III | 60 | NJCAA 2026-27 team roll |
| NJCAA | No division shown on the roll | 4 | NJCAA 2026-27 team roll |
| NJCAA | All divisions | 360 | |
| All three | 1,527 |
In the NCAA directory, Division I softball teams play in 32 conferences. Division II has 23 conferences plus one independent team, and Division III 43 conferences plus one independent team. The NJCAA’s roll places its softball teams in 24 regions.
The NAIA figure is our count, not the NAIA’s. The NAIA sponsors softball, and its 2027 national championship is a 48-team tournament, but none of the NAIA documents we read says how many of its schools field a team. So on October 29, 2026 we read each NAIA conference’s own softball pages. The 190 teams play in 19 conferences:
- 84 were already listed on a 2026-27 conference page.
- 106 come from the conferences’ spring 2026 standings, each school checked against its conference’s current member list.
- Not counted: five schools that played in 2025-26 but aren’t on their conference’s current list (or had no games), until a page shows a 2026-27 team; NAIA schools that belong to no conference; and one conference whose softball pages stop at 2024-25.
The conference pages we read are listed on our NAIA softball guide. The 1,527 total adds the three counts above, so it carries the NAIA count’s limits too.
Why the counts you find don’t agree
Different documents count different things at different times:
- A different season. The NCAA’s own sponsorship report, published in October 2026, counts 2025-26: 308 Division I, 270 Division II and 390 Division III teams, 968 in all, with 21,933 players. The directory lists the schools sponsoring softball in 2026-27. The NCAA notes that the report includes only active NCAA members and that its 2025-26 figures may not be directly comparable with earlier years.
- A different document. The NJCAA’s planning document for its 2028 postseason counts 140 Division I and 166 Division II softball teams, without saying when it counted them. Its 2026-27 team roll lists 136 and 160.
- No date at all. A count with no season and no source can’t be checked. Every number on this page carries both, and it will be re-read each season.
Not in these counts: community colleges in California, which play softball in the CCCAA (3C2A), and two-year colleges in the Northwest, which play in the NWAC. Both run their own softball championships outside the NJCAA. Club teams aren’t counted either.
