Travel Ball and College Softball Recruiting: The NCAA Calendar and the Organizations | RosterWise™
Travel ball is club softball played outside high school, and the NCAA's Division I softball calendar treats it differently from high-school games. In 2026-27, Division I coaches may evaluate at travel-ball (non-scholastic) events in the two contact periods, August 1–9, 2026 and June 12–July 31, 2027, and on six fall weekends from October 17 to November 22, 2026; every other evaluation period is for high-school games and practices only. Several national organizations sanction or run travel-ball play: USA Softball (the sport's national governing body), The Alliance Fastpitch, PGF, USSSA and Triple Crown Sports among them. This page describes each in its own words, with no rankings and no endorsements.
If your daughter plays travel ball (club teams, weekend tournaments, national events), her recruiting and her club season will overlap. The NCAA’s rules decide when college coaches may watch those events, and those rules differ from the ones for high-school games. This page gives the Division I rules for 2026-27, then describes the main national travel-ball organizations in their own words.
What this page doesn’t do: rank clubs, organizations, events or players, or recommend one over another. We don’t have data on which events college coaches attend or how much travel ball costs, and we won’t estimate it.
When Division I coaches may evaluate at travel-ball events
The NCAA’s Division I softball recruiting calendar separates scholastic activity (high-school practices and games) from non-scholastic activity, which includes travel ball. For 2026-27 (calendar updated July 30, 2026):
| Dates | Period | Travel-ball events? |
|---|---|---|
| Aug. 1–9, 2026 | Contact | The NCAA defines a contact period as allowing in-person contact and evaluation off campus |
| Aug. 10–Nov. 22, 2026 (except the weekends below) | Evaluation | No: high-school practices and games only |
| Oct. 17–18, Oct. 24–25, Oct. 31–Nov. 1, Nov. 7–8, Nov. 14–15, Nov. 21–22, 2026 | Evaluation | Yes: high-school and non-scholastic events |
| Nov. 23, 2026–Jan. 2, 2027 | Quiet | No evaluation off campus |
| Jan. 3–May 31, 2027 | Evaluation | No: high-school practices and games only |
| June 1–11, 2027 | Dead | No evaluation |
| June 12–July 31, 2027 | Contact | In-person contact and evaluation off campus (start date moves with the Women’s College World Series) |
Two points follow. First, from January 3 through May 31, 2027, Division I evaluation periods cover high-school practices and games only. Second, when a coach may evaluate and when a coach may contact a recruit are separate rules: whatever the calendar allows, a Division I coach may not contact her before 1 p.m. Central on September 1 of her junior year; see the recruiting timeline.
These are Division I’s rules. Division II, Division III, the NAIA and the NJCAA don’t use this calendar; their rules are summarized on the timeline page.
Camps run outside a college
Travel organizations and private companies also run camps. A Division I softball coach may work at a privately owned or other non-college camp only while the calendar allows evaluation at non-scholastic events, and only if the camp follows the rules for a college’s own camp: open to all entrants, publicly advertised at least 14 days ahead, and no free or reduced admission for award winners (2026-27 Division I Manual, Bylaw 13.12.2.2.8). More in Softball Camps Before Junior Year.
The national travel-ball organizations, in their own words
Each description below comes from the organization’s own website, read October 29, 2026. Listing an organization here is not an endorsement, and the list isn’t complete.
USA Softball. The national governing body of softball in the United States, formerly the Amateur Softball Association (ASA), dating to 1933. It was named the sport’s national governing body under the Amateur Sports Act of 1978. Its youth program is the Junior Olympic (JO) program, which runs girls’ fast-pitch national championships from 10-under through 18-under; its GOLD National Championships are its top level for 16-under and 18-under. USA Softball says it has grown to more than 120,000 teams and more than one million members.
The Alliance Fastpitch. It describes itself as “a national organizing body for travel softball,” formed in summer 2020. Play starts in its regional member leagues (nine are listed on its site) and leads to national events, including the Alliance Fastpitch Championship Series (AFCS), whose format the Alliance says follows the NCAA softball postseason. Its seeding committee places the top 32 teams in regionals for its 14-under through 18-under divisions.
PGF (Premier Girls Fastpitch). Runs PGF Nationals. Its site announces the 2027 dates as July 23–31 (week one) and August 1–8 (week two).
USSSA. Its national-championships site lists fastpitch national championship events held by region, among them a Southeast national championship, a Great Lakes national championship and “C” Eastern national championships.
Triple Crown Sports. Runs fastpitch events alongside baseball, volleyball and pickleball events.
Questions to ask a travel-ball club
- “Which events will the team play during the NCAA’s travel-ball evaluation weekends?” In 2026-27 those are six fall weekends; in summer, the contact period.
- “Which organization’s events does the team play in, and does that require a membership?” Each organization sets its own membership and qualifying rules.
- “What does the club’s coach do to help players with college recruiting?” Ask for specifics, and see Recruiting Red Flags for promises to be wary of.
- “What does a season cost, including travel?” Ask for the full figure in writing before committing.

RosterWise Softball is in development
RosterWise™ apps for soccer, volleyball, lacrosse and wrestling show every college roster by position and class year, where its players come from, and how a recruit fits. A softball app is in development. Until it ships, these guides cover the rules, each one sourced to the governing body.
