Men's College Rowing | RosterWise™

The NCAA does not hold a men's rowing championship. The Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) holds its national championship for varsity heavyweight and lightweight men's crews, with a Division 3 championship alongside; the 2027 regatta is set for May 28-30, 2027 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The Eastern Sprints, the Dad Vail Regatta and, for club teams, the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) championship are part of the same season. The NCAA's 2026-27 limit tables don't list men's rowing, and we don't state which NCAA recruiting rules reach a men's crew: ask each program about aid and recruiting. This page explains each piece as of October 2026.

Men’s college rowing has no NCAA championship, so its season is organized by other bodies: the IRA and the regattas linked to it, the Dad Vail Regatta and, for club teams, ACRA. This page explains each one as of October 2026, and what to ask a program.

For how these bodies fit alongside the NCAA’s women’s championships, see who governs college rowing.

No NCAA championship

The NCAA does not hold a men’s rowing championship. In the NCAA’s 2026-27 list of current championships (Bylaw 18.3 of the Division I, II and III Manuals), rowing appears only in the women’s column, and it is not among the 15 National Collegiate Championships. The NCAA’s sports sponsorship and participation data, covering 2000-01 through 2025-26, has no men’s rowing row in any year.

The IRA National Championship

The Intercollegiate Rowing Association’s constitution, revised July 1, 2026, gives its purpose as holding a post-season national championship each year, the IRA National Championship, for the top intercollegiate heavyweight men’s, lightweight men’s and lightweight women’s crews. The IRA’s tradition of awarding trophies began in 1898, when the Varsity Challenge Cup was first presented to the University of Pennsylvania.

The regatta also includes a Division 3 championship. The IRA said its 2026 regatta was “the fifth consecutive one to host a D3 championship.”

2026 and 2027. The 2026 regatta, the 123rd, was scheduled for May 29-31, 2026 at Lake Natoma in Gold River, California, according to the IRA’s announcement of May 19, 2026. The 2027 IRA National Championship, the 124th, is set for Friday, May 28 to Sunday, May 30, 2027 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.

Who can race

IRA membership is open to four-year colleges with at least one varsity rowing team. To race at the IRA National Championship, a team must have varsity status from its school and be run by the athletics department. The IRA says that where its rules point to NCAA legislation, it follows the rule as written in the NCAA manual, and eligibility questions go to the NCAA.

The men’s categories

The IRA says its members compete at the Division 1 or Division 3 level (the IRA writes its divisions with numerals) in men’s heavyweight, men’s lightweight or women’s lightweight rowing, and that all members may race at the IRA National Championship. As of October 29, 2026, its membership page lists men’s members under three headings:

  • Division 1 Heavyweight Men. The current list is on the IRA’s membership page.
  • Division 1 Lightweight Men (11 schools): Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Harvard, Mercyhurst, MIT, Princeton, the US Naval Academy, Penn and Yale.
  • Division 3 Men (23 schools): Bates, Catholic, Colby, Connecticut College, Franklin & Marshall, Hamilton, Ithaca, Lewis & Clark, Marietta, Massachusetts Maritime, Milwaukee School of Engineering, RIT, Skidmore, St. Lawrence, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Trinity, Tufts, Union, the US Coast Guard Academy, Washington College, Wesleyan, Williams and WPI.

The fourth list, Lightweight Women, is on our women’s college rowing page.

The events

In rowing’s boat names, a “+” means the boat carries a coxswain, so the eight (8+) has eight rowers and a coxswain (USRowing terminology).

  • Heavyweight men: Varsity 8+, 2nd Varsity 8+ and 3rd Varsity 8+, each limited to 24 entries. A school may enter the 2V8+ only if its V8+ is entered, and the 3V8+ only if both are. The Varsity 4+ is open to any member, with one entry per school.
  • Lightweight men: Varsity 8+ (10 entries), 2nd Varsity 8+ (only for schools whose V8+ is entered) and Coxed 4+ (10 entries; open to any member, but schools in the V8+ and 2V8+ get priority).
  • Division 3: Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ (the second only for schools whose Division 3 V8+ is entered).

Lightweight and coxswain rules at the IRA

At the IRA, each lightweight man has an individual maximum of 160.0 lb, and the crew average may not exceed 155.0 lb. The IRA’s coxswain minimum for heavyweight and lightweight men’s crews is 125 lb.

Other bodies set their own numbers. USRowing’s 2026 Rules of Rowing, for example, set a 160 lb maximum for men’s lightweight rowers with no crew average, and a 120 lb coxswain minimum in men’s events. See our guide to lightweight and openweight rowing.

The affiliate regattas: the Eastern Sprints and the NIRC

In a March 2021 announcement, the IRA called three regattas its “affiliate regattas”: the Men’s Eastern Sprints, the Women’s Eastern Sprints and the National Invitational Rowing Championship (NIRC). All three race on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts. The IRA publishes a page for each.

  • Eastern Sprints. The 80th is set for Sunday, May 16, 2027. Heavyweight and lightweight crews race. Its team trophies are the Rowe Cup, for combined points, first presented to the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) in 1946, and the Jope Cup, for lightweight points, first presented to the EARC in 1963.
  • NIRC. The 33rd is set for Sunday, May 9, 2027.

The Dad Vail Regatta

The Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta is staged by the Dad Vail Regatta Organizing Committee. Its organizers describe it as drawing over 100 colleges and universities from the U.S. and Canada. According to the regatta’s history page, the Dad Vail Rowing Association was founded at a February 1939 meeting, set up to “foster and encourage intercollegiate rowing among colleges new to the sport.” The regatta’s 2026 program book set the 87th regatta for Friday, May 8 to Saturday, May 9, 2026 on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, New Jersey.

Varsity and club men race separate eights. Under the 2026 eligibility rules, only crews their school considers varsity may enter the DI/DII Men’s Varsity Eight. The Club/DIII Men’s Varsity Eight is for club crews and NCAA Division III varsity crews. Athletes must be eligible under the rules of one of the bodies the regatta names, including the NCAA, the IRA and ACRA, and all must be full-time undergraduates; graduate students with eligibility left may also race.

The men’s eights. The regatta’s points tables (revised December 10, 2025) list men’s eights as V8, 2V8, 3V8, Frosh/Novice 8, DIII & Club V8, and Lightweight V8/2V8. The table marks the lightweight eights as events “not held for lack of entries,” without saying which year’s regatta that describes.

Club rowing: ACRA

The American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) says in its 2026 regatta packet that its membership is made up of university and college club rowing teams, plus junior and community college teams, men’s and women’s, that cannot enter the NCAA or IRA championships through their athletic department. Any club program its university recognizes may enter the ACRA Championship; from 2026, programs that have not raced it before must apply.

ACRA sets its own eligibility rules. Under its 2026 regatta packet:

  • Clubs with a varsity counterpart. Where a school has both a club and a varsity team of the same gender, an athlete who races once for the varsity is ineligible for ACRA that year. A recruited athlete, meaning one given admissions support by athletics such as a pre-read, a recruiting slot or an athletic scholarship, is ineligible for the year they appear on the roster.
  • Enrollment. Athletes must be full-time undergraduates, taking at least 12 credit hours, or graduate students with eligibility left.
  • Seasons. For students who enroll full time from 2026-27, ACRA has adopted the NCAA’s age-based “5-for-5” model, five seasons in five years, replacing “4 in 5.”

The 2027 ACRA Championships are set for May 21-23, 2027 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The NAIA

As of October 2026, the NAIA says it offers 31 national championship sports, and rowing is not one of them. Oklahoma City University, an NAIA school, fields men’s rowing and is listed by the IRA as a Division 1 heavyweight member.

Paying for college: what the rules say

The NCAA’s tables. The 2026-27 NCAA Manuals don’t list men’s rowing in their limit tables: the Division I roster-limit table (Bylaw 17.2) lists “Women’s Rowing” and no men’s rowing, and the Division II men’s scholarship table (Bylaw 15.4.2.1.1) has no rowing entry. Those are absences in the tables, not rules that say what applies to a men’s crew. Division III’s no-athletic-aid rule (Bylaw 15.01.3) covers “any student.”

The Ivy League. The league’s prospective-athlete page says: “There are no academic or athletic scholarships in the Ivy League.” Ivy schools give financial aid, including to athletes, only on the basis of financial need, as each school’s financial aid office determines. A coach may ask for a financial aid estimate for a recruit, but only the financial aid office can set the aid package.

For a men’s recruit at a Division I or II school, ask the program whether it offers athletic aid in rowing, how much, and under which rules. Our scholarships guide has more.

Recruiting rules: ask each program

We don’t state which NCAA recruiting rules reach a men’s crew. Ask each men’s program which rules it follows: when its coaches may call and write, when visits can happen, and whether and when it makes written offers. If the coach isn’t sure, ask the school’s compliance office. Our recruiting timeline sets out the NCAA’s dates for women’s rowing, for comparison.

Questions to ask coaches

  1. “Is your team a varsity team run by the athletics department, or a club?” To race at the IRA National Championship, a team must have varsity status and be run by the athletics department; ACRA’s members include club teams.
  2. “Which recruiting rules does your program follow?” We don’t state which NCAA rules reach a men’s crew; the program can.
  3. “Which regattas does your team race in the spring?” The Sprints, the Dad Vail, the IRA and ACRA each have their own entry rules.
  4. “Do you offer athletic aid in men’s rowing, and how much?” The NCAA’s limit tables don’t list men’s rowing.
  5. “Do you have a lightweight team, and which body’s rules does it race under?” The IRA’s lightweight limits differ from other bodies’.
  6. “Do you take walk-ons or novices?” See our walk-ons and novices guide.

What families can count on

The bodies on this page publish their own rules and dates, and each is dated above. What none of them settles is how a particular men’s program recruits and what it offers. That comes from the program.
