NAIA Softball for Recruits: Scholarships, Eligibility, the Season and the 2027 Championship | RosterWise™

The NAIA runs its own softball rules, separate from the NCAA's. By our count of its conferences' own pages, 190 NAIA teams play softball in 2026-27, in 19 conferences. Its upper limit for institutional aid in softball is 10, and that limit counts academic and leadership scholarships the school funds as well as athletic awards. It places no limit on roster size. A player has four seasons within 10 semesters, playing in 11 games uses one of them, and a first-time NAIA athlete needs a decision from the NAIA Eligibility Center before she competes. The NAIA sets no national date for first contact; each school's practices and its conference's rules apply. Teams may play 50 games, and the 2027 national championship has a new shape: 48 teams at eight opening-round sites, then an eight-team World Series ending in a best-of-three final.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is its own governing body, with its own rules on aid, eligibility, recruiting and the season. None of the NCAA’s dates or limits apply to an NAIA program. This page gives the NAIA’s softball rules for 2026-27 from its own Handbook and its 2026-27 softball coaches manual.

How many NAIA schools play softball

By our count, 190 teams in 19 conferences for 2026-27 (read October 29, 2026). None of the NAIA documents we read states how many of its schools field a softball team, so the number is ours, counted from each NAIA conference’s own softball pages:

  • 84 teams were already listed on a 2026-27 conference page.
  • 106 come from the conferences’ spring 2026 standings, each school checked against its conference’s current member list.
  • Not counted: five schools that played in 2025-26 but aren’t on their conference’s current list (or had no games), until a page shows a 2026-27 team; NAIA schools that belong to no conference; and one conference whose softball pages stop at 2024-25.

The conference pages we read are in the sources at the end of this page. For every level side by side, see the softball hub.

Scholarships: an aid limit of 10, and no roster limit

The NAIA’s upper limit for institutional aid in softball is 10 (Handbook, Council of Presidents policy XIII). Two things make it different from an NCAA equivalency limit:

  • It counts more than athletic awards. Countable aid is any aid the school funds, controls or allocates: athletic scholarships, but also academic, leadership and performance scholarships, outside scholarships the school administers, and room or meal credits. Federal and state grants such as Pell, loans the school doesn’t control and campus jobs don’t count.
  • It applies to players who actually compete. A player’s aid counts toward the team’s limit once she plays in more than 20% of the season’s allowed varsity games or in NAIA postseason play.

The NAIA places no limit on the number of players on a varsity roster. For how academic and athletic aid combine, see Stacking Academic and Athletic Aid, and compare the levels in Softball Scholarships After the House Settlement.

Recruiting: no national first-contact date

The NCAA’s junior-year contact dates don’t apply in the NAIA. The NAIA Handbook sets no national date for first contact. It says recruiting must follow each school’s own accepted practices and, where a conference exists, its conference’s recruiting rules. So an NAIA coach may be allowed to contact a recruit earlier than a Division I coach can, depending on the school and the conference; ask each program which rules it follows.

Eligibility

The NAIA Eligibility Center. A first-time NAIA athlete must have an eligible decision from the NAIA Eligibility Center before she represents an NAIA school in competition. It is separate from the NCAA Eligibility Center; for the NCAA side, see Academic Eligibility and the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Four seasons in 10 semesters. An NAIA player may compete four seasons in one sport within 10 semesters (12 trimesters or 15 quarters) of attendance.

When a season counts. In softball, a player who appears in 11 games during the 24-week season is charged a season of competition.

The season

NAIA softball teams may play 50 games. Practice may begin September 1 or at the start of the school’s fall term, whichever is earlier. For 2026-27, fall games could begin September 1, 2026, and games after winter break may begin Thursday, January 28, 2027.

The 2027 NAIA Softball National Championship

The format is new for 2026-27:

Round Format Dates
Opening round 48 teams at eight sites, each a six-team, double-elimination bracket May 17–20, 2027
NAIA World Series Eight teams, double elimination, ending in a best-of-three final May 27–June 2, 2027 (site to be announced)

A conference with six teams competing receives one automatic berth to the opening round, and a conference with 10 or more teams receives two. Each team certifies a championship roster of 22 players.

Questions to ask NAIA coaches

  1. “How do you divide the team’s aid, and does my academic scholarship count toward it?” In the NAIA it may, because countable aid includes academic awards the school funds.
  2. “What recruiting rules does your conference set?” With no national contact date, the conference’s rules are the ones that apply.
  3. “What do you need from me for the NAIA Eligibility Center, and by when?” She needs its decision before she can compete.
  4. “How many players will be on next year’s roster?” With no roster limit, rosters can be any size.
